That's true, the speaker's accent does change the sounds a lot. I'm from California, and the examples that TheShoggoth posted are pretty much the opposite of how the sounds are in American English (for example, "ho" is more like hotel and less like hostel). However, it isn't good to learn Japanese sounds using English under any circumstance, the best way is to hear a native speaker speak the Japanese sounds as they should be.

Haha, yes, I suppose you're right. In Australian English, the sounds are very similar to the Japanese counterparts (since we don't stress our vowels too heavily in most circumstances)-- they're either hard or soft. That aside, it's probably good to link a video or something with people singing gojuon:
