I actually do know of a French guy teaching English... but he came here on a spouse visa so he is allowed to do any job..
I think it would be difficult to get a company to employ you if you are not a native speaker unless your English and accent are perfect..

Do students in Japan study any western language other than English?

In middle school and elementary school they generally only study English. I've known some high schools to offer other languages - often it is Korean and/or Chinese, but I've also known some higher academic high schools that offer French and German and Spanish.

Mostly tho the kids have to study a mandatory 6 years of English, which is changing to 8 years starting in 2011.

JB - You might find work in one of the large cities teaching French - check out the normal job sites like gaijinpot.com and ohayosensei.com

I don't think you'd find much work in the more rural areas except for private lessons.

Thanks for the info, I will look on all those sites. I also consider another way to stay in Japan for a year, but as it's not teaching, I will have to go to the other employment thread...
