I'm planning on staying in Japan for three months for a university program, and I was wondering if it would be plausible (or even possible) for me to find temporary part-time work while there. Obviously it'd be something low-key and unskilled, perhaps a waitress or something. I doubt it but I may be wrong. Please forgive my naivete.

Assuming you would be here on a student visa, you would need permission from immigration to work.
They will usually let students work up to 20 hours a week..
but make sure you get permission from them first.
