Japanese tend to not visit each other's homes very much (partly because there usually isn't a lot of space) so they like to meet at cafes and restaurants. Izakaya are traditional Japanese restaurants, usually with tatami floors and low tables but western style places are popular too. Usually it is "betsu betsu" style where each person pays their own way.
