"o" is like the "o" in "rope"

"ko" is like the "co" in "cope"

"so" is like the "so" in "soap"

"to" is like the "to" in "tofu" (obviously)

"no" is like the "no" in "note"

These are the most similar sounds in English, but it's not exactly how you pronounce it because Japanese is pronounced very differently than English. The Japan Channel has YouTube videos on Hiragana and Katakana, I recommend checking either of these out in order to help you understand how to pronounce each of those sounds.

the _o sound is more like:
"ko" is similar to coffee (in fact,ko-hi, means coffee) and not comb
"so" is similar to sorry and not soda
"to" is similar to tick tock and not toasted or toby
"no" is similar to nomnom (and, funnily,'nomu' means 'to drink'-- though it'd be funnier if it meant to eat (which is the unfunny 'taberu' ) and not nose

similarly:
"ho" is similar to hostel and not hotel
"mo" is similar to motto and not motel
"yo" is similar to yob (don't know if you know that word!) and not yogi bear
"ro" is similar to rocky (well, intricacies in the 'r' sound come about, but that's more or less the idea) and not rose

We English speakers pronounce tofu like toe-foo, but it's actually more like toh-hfu

I JUST realised that these word guides will be different to speakers of English with accents differing from my own-- I'm from Australia.

weal5300, it's closer to the '*oh' sound than the 'o', so, again, tofu is not pronounced toe-foo, but more like toh-hfu as the o is shorter. I know the, I want to say, 'general' US accent (I guess Californian) tends to pronounce words such as 'otter' how I would perceive as 'ahtter', so it's hard for me to come up with examples that would work for everybody =S Sorry!

There are different pronunciation types within the U.S. as well. It's possible that someone from California or Maine would have a very different regional speech standard and pattern from someone in Georgia or Tennessee.
