I found katakana best to learn first because of the signs and menus too.
It also meant I can write my name when I need too!!
Sun is right that it is usually for foreign words but there are so many foreign words in Japan now (I read that the Tokyo newspaper is 10% foreign words!).

I first learned hiragana which was easiest, but I am now working on katakana. I only know the kanji for ocha(tea)...

Hello Kawaii-chan

I did the opposite and learned katakana first because I noticed it is used on signs and menus.
(Hiragana looks more difficult to me! )

I have only learned a few kanji too.. only 5,000+ more to go!!

My friends were talking about this again recently and talking about how many times knowing katakana has saved us from eating something we would not have liked eating

Learn katakana first!!

I learned hiragana first, followed by katakana. I learned a few kanji along the way, but now I should focus on kanji. Anyway, I did have some trouble confusing characters when shifting from hiragana to katakana, but it wasn't that difficult. So I guess the order doesn't matter too much.
