Hi all

I would like to know where snow falls regularly in japan, im trying to find a place to live that gets real winters like we have in Canada.

I am aware of the northern island and sapporro.

I wouldnt mind places near osaka or further north, but i love snow

hey...last year there's snowfall in mid december on norhern part of Japan, not just Hokkaido. But usually Hokkaido area has the thick snowfall at early stage.

And tokyo was somewhere around March...just some snowflakes...

So depends on what kind of snow thickness you refering to. And you're visiting schedule??

ii would say it's hard to predict the snowfall nowadays due to global warming. So the forecast is severe weather pattern.

As a Canadian living in the "colder" part of Japan, I have to say that your not going to find anything close to the Canadian winter.
I'm from the prairies and I'm used to winter being ridiculously cold.
I currently live in Niigata prefecture, and have seen 2 winters here now. The winter is very mild. On the coldest days it might hit -5. Hokkaido, I hear is colder, a little closer to Canada.
However I would recommend re-thinking 'snow'. In Japan, it's not dealt with like it is in Canada. In Canada we clear our sidewalks and roads with shovels and we put down salt and gravel. Here in Niigata, at least, snow is removed by spraying water on it. And while this removes the snow, everything is flooded. And on the cold days it means that everything is a sheet of ice. This last winter we had about 6feet of snow. I dont recommend basing where you go in Japan on snow. Winter is terrible because everything is soaking wet and icy.

This is also something I have been wondering about. I went to Kyoto when I was 14 in summer and got a picture of Ginkakuji covered in snow from the souvenir shop. I had been wanting to go when it is snowing there ever since. Does anyone have an idea when is it most likely to snow in Kyoto?
